Derek Chauvin has been discharged from the hospital after he was stabbed 22 times in prison by a Mexican mafia informant on Black Friday.

The former Minneapolis cop, 47, has been sent back to the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona to continue his recovery as he serves a 22-year sentence for the murder of George Floyd

John Turscak, 52, has been charged with attempted murder after he attacked Chauvin at the prison library with an 'improvised knife.' He reportedly told investigators he chose the day after Thanksgiving for its symbolic connection to the Black Lives Matter movement, which were in-part sparked by Floyd's May 2020 murder.

The career criminal told correctional officers he would have killed Chauvin if they hadn't responded so quickly, according to court documents, which also revealed guards had to use pepper spray to subdue Turscak.

Floyd's lawyer Gregory Erickson told CBS News that Chauvin's family is concerned about his safety at the facility in the future following the attack and are working to remove him from the prison.

Turscak, a career criminal who went by the nickname 'Stranger', had been serving a 30-year sentence scheduled to end in 2026. He now faces decades more in prison and has been moved to an adjacent federal penitentiary in Tucson.

He told investigators he had been planning the attack for a month because of Chauvin's high-profile but denied having wanted to kill him

He shot to notoriety over two decades ago after providing information that led to the indictments of more than 40 suspected members of the Mexican Mafia while acting as an informant, according to the Los Angeles Times.
