A bystander who cooled down exhausted athletes with a high pressure hose in one hand while holding a beer in the other has received a participation medal for his 'legendary' efforts.

The man' was holidaying at a property along the route of the annual Flying Brick Bellarine Sunset Run which took place in 28C heat on the Bellarine Peninsula, south-west of Melbourne last Saturday.

Donning a wide-brimmed hat and wielding a hose and a beer, the helped cool off some of the 900 participants by drenching them with water from across the street.

Some of the runners broke from the path to enjoy the soaking and thank the man.

After being branded as a 'national hero', event organisers have tracked down the man to give him a participation medal 'because he earned it'.
