A ban on the sale and supply of single-use vapes in Scotland will come into effect next year, ministers have said.

The products will be outlawed as part of a UK-wide crackdown, with the Scottish Government's legislation set to take effect on April 1.

A consultation on 'Creating a Smokefree Generation and Tackling Youth Vaping', which ran across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland last year, raised serious concerns over the health impact on teens.

Of those who responded during the consultation process in Scotland, 82.3 per cent supported an outright ban.

More than 26 million disposable vapes are estimated to have been thrown away in Scotland in the past year, with MSPs also being warned of a 'massive' spike in young people using them.

Each nation will introduce their own legislation, with MSPs expected to vote for the prohibition of single-use vapes.

After publishing draft legislation yesterday, circular economy minister Lorna Slater said the countries had worked together to agree a start date for the ban.

She added: 'Legislating to ban the sale and supply of single-use vapes fulfils a Programme for Government commitment to reduce vaping among young people and take action to tackle the environmental impact.

'The public consultation demonstrated strong support for tougher action on vaping.
