DNA technology has been used to helped solve the brutal murder of two Virginia women after their case went cold for nearly 40 years.

Elroy Harrison, 65, was charged on Tuesday in the slaying of Jacqueline Lard, a 32-woman from Virginia, whose body was found in a wooded area under a pile of discarded carpet on November 14, 1986, according to Stafford County Sheriff's Office, The Daily Beast reported.

Lard, a mother-of -two was beaten to death. Her car was found a month later abandoned in Fairfax County. Though DNA evidence was collected, officials were unable to connect them to a suspect and the case went cold.

Three years later, Amy Baker, an 18-year-old woman, went missing after visiting a relative house in Falls Church, Virginia on March 29, 1989.

Her car was found along Interstate 95, and her body was discovered two days later in a wooded area. Baker was strangled and her body was dumped along the highway, Fairfax County Police said.

In December 2023, a family name for the suspect was identified. Detectives obtained a search warrant for DNA - which later linked Harrison to the murders of the two women, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office said
