A leading NHS fertility clinic was forced to close down and report itself to the police after fears that over 150 embryos have been destroyed.

Regulators ordered the Homerton Fertility Centre in east London to suspend services after being warned that 153 embryos from 45 women may not survive the freezing process - with whistleblowers claiming the true figure may be higher still.

Essential staff were told on Friday to work in pairs under 'increased security' after concerns were raised about unsupervised access to storage areas for eggs, sperm, and embryos, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The trust said: 'Staff at Homerton Healthcare's fertility centre are currently investigating issues relating to the storage of embryos. There have been three separate incidents within the unit which have highlighted errors in a small number of freezing processes.
