Furious residents are demanding action to tackle masses of cars parking 'illegally' outside their homes, with vehicles taking over almost every inch of the kerb.

Locals in the Cardiff suburb of Gabalfa have put up a warning sign after becoming 'fed up' with vehicles they describe as dangerously and illegally left.

They say students from Cardiff Metropolitan University's Llandaff campus have been leaving their cars for two decades but the disruption has got 'progressively worse' - making the area look like it has been 'turned into a car park'.

Limited space means parking at the campus is only available to staff members living further than two miles away, according to a rule in force since 2010.

The university has tried to ease issues by handing out £200 annual bus pass discounts to 800 of its students backed by the Welsh Government.

But arguments between residents and students are now being reported on a regular basis due to cars being parked over driveways and obstructing the pavements.

The parking blockages can force people to walk on the road, with particular disruption for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs.

The animosity has risen to a point that a handwritten sign has been put up to ward off students, telling them: 'No student parking in Gabalfa.'

Malcolm Pepper, 79, who has lived in Gabalfa for 23 years, described the scenes as 'absolutely mental' and said each year was worst than the last.

He said: 'There are not enough car parking facilities for students - there needs to be more to stop them parking around here.'

Suzie, 64, has lived on Western Drive for 23 years and says walking through Gabalfa can be difficult and 'really dangerous' due to so many cars cars parked in the streets.

She said: 'It's so dangerous - crossing the street is dangerous because you are having to step out onto the road to see if a car is coming.

'Cars also park along the pavement, not leaving enough room for wheelchairs or pushchairs to go past and often not even a person can fit.'

Mark Davies, 53, a Western Drive resident since 2003, has never known a time when parking there did not cause issues.

He said: 'The problem isn't that the students park here, it's the way they park. They park on double-yellow lines, across the pavements and on the corners.

'I understand why they park here, though - would you pay to park somewhere else when you could park here for free?

'But Gabalfa has turned into a car park over the years because of it.'
