A market trader has been kicked off his 'beloved' pick and mix stall after 25 years because the council wants to 'rebrand with a focus on fresh produce'.

Kevin Hilliard has been given a month to quit his stall in Saxmundham, Suffolk - where he sells traditional sweets like jelly babies, flying saucers, sherbet dabs and fruit gums - by the council.

The council claims it wants to change the market, which is 'on the brink of closure', to focus on fresh produce with an aim of attracting more customers.

The ban will impact Kevin's livelihood as he will only be able to operate his stall at the market in Stowmarket on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Kevin's customers are furious at the move and his daughter Michaela Kerry has launched a Facebook campaign and petition that has already received more than 1,000 signatures.

She said: 'Last week a hardworking man arrived at his stall in the weekly market in Saxmundham and within half an hour of his arrival, he received two letters from the town council.

'The first discussed a restructure of the market; the second was addressed directly to him stating that they could no longer support his pick n mix sweets stall and asked him to vacate by March 27th.
