Sir John Major today blasted Tory MPs seeking to topple Rishi Sunak and install a fourth different prime minister since the 2019 general election.

The ex-premier, who led the Conservatives between 1990 to 1997, hit out at Tory 'malcontents' seeking to continue the party's infighting of recent years.

He lashed out at ex-PM Liz Truss's sacking of the Treasury's top civil servant when she entered No10, while he also did not spare Mr Sunak as he criticised his Rwanda asylum plan.

It came as Sir John teamed up with fellow former PM Gordon Brown to back calls for an overhaul of how Britain is run.

He claimed the UK's system of Cabinet government had become 'too large and cumbersome'.
