India has commenced plans to allow migrants in - providing they are not Muslim.

The law will see those seeking refuge from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan fast-rack citizenship in India.

However applications from Muslims will not be considered.

The plans, as part of the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA), have been heavily critisised for appearing Islamophobic.

The law was actually passed back in 2019 but sparked mass protests in which scores of people died and many more were arrested - leading to a delay in the plans beginning.

India's home affairs minister Amit Shah took to social media to say: '(Prime Minister Narendra Modi has) delivered on another commitment and realised the promise of the makers of our constitution to the Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians living in those countries.'

Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party, said: 'CAA is meant to only target Muslims, it serves no other purpose.'

Protests against the CAA have started in some states, including Assam, where the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) - which started the 2019 protests in the north-eastern state - has given a call for a shutdown on Tuesday.
