Rev Christopher Brain was the founder of the Nine O'Clock Service in Sheffield

The head of a controversial Christian church movement has appeared in court charged with rape and dozens of indecent assault offences against women in his congregation.

The Rev Christopher Brain, 66, led the evangelical Nine O’Clock Service (NOS) in Sheffield, which in its heyday attracted hundreds of young people to services likened to nightclub scenes.

The alleged offences date back more than four decades and are said to have taken place between 1981 and 1995.

Brain is said to have sexually assaulted 11 women over the age of 16.

The charges include allegations that he kissed one woman, pulled her top up ‘re-enacting a rape scene'.
