Rishi Sunak made what was billed as a major speech yesterday. Its purpose was three-fold.

First, he wanted to trumpet good economic news which he said proved his plan to turn around Britain's fortunes was working.

Secondly, he was keen to restate his commitment to getting the Rwanda scheme off the ground before the summer.

Thirdly, and most importantly, he needed to head off a rebellion in the ranks, designed to have him replaced as Tory leader and PM before the general election.

Do these plotters honestly believe the country will take seriously a party which has defenestrated three leaders in two years? If so, they are sorely mistaken.

If the worst happens, the Conservatives will have only themselves and their puffed-up egos to blame. The message, from many polls over many decades, couldn't be clearer – the British don't elect divided parties.
