Speculation about an autumn election intensified last night after Jeremy Hunt hinted it could be held in October.
Giving evidence to a parliamentary committee, the Chancellor revealed the Treasury is already working on the next comprehensive spending review on the assumption that Rishi Sunak favours an October poll.
In a further sign that the election will be delayed until after summer, Downing Street announced that European leaders will be invited to the UK in July to discuss the war in Ukraine and the fight against illegal migration.
