Just Stop Oil targets Labour's Emily Thornberry: Activists sprinkle orange ... trends now

Two Just Stop Oil supporters hijacked an event featuring Emily Thornberry yesterday, after she ignored a letter the eco-protest group sent to her home last week. 

The letter requested Thornberry, who serves as Shadow Attorney General, to leave Labour if the Party fails to revoke the Tory oil licences granted since 2021.

As Thornberry was delivering her open remarks at the Institute for Government, the pair interrupted and stood up to confront the Labour frontbencher. 

They threw orange confetti and began shouting their demands at the assembly. 

One said: 'Labour needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Everyone else has clocked that new oil and gas means more floods, more fires, rising food prices… when are you going to get it?'

After the pair were led away, Ms Thornberry addressed the audience, saying she had become 'hardened' to regular protests over the environment and Gaza.

She said: 'I'm happy to argue the issues, I'm not happy to be told I'm responsible for the murder of babies in Gaza, or I'm personally responsible for the boiling of the planet.'

One of those taking action today was Genevieve Shanahan, 33, a university lecturer.
