Aussies heading to Bali have been warned they could be streets by police for on-the-spot inspections to verify payment of the new 'tourist tax'.

The Indonesian holiday hotspot's new 'tourist tax' for foreign visitors came into effect last month as part of a crackdown on unruly tourists.

Officials have revealed that less than half of foreign arrivals have paid the 150,000 rupiah (A$15) levy upon entering the island in the five weeks since.

From next week, police will be out in force on the streets and at popular attractions conducting checks and requesting visitors to show their tourism tax levy voucher received upon payment.

Tourists caught out having not yet paid the levy will be ordered to do so on-the-spot, the Bali Sun reported.
