Scotland is in the grip of an NHS dental ‘crisis’ – as nearly two million people haven’t had a check-up or treatment in the past three years.
The shocking statistic is blamed on an exodus of dentists and soaring waiting times.
Figures show that 1.8 million Scots have not attended a dental practice since 2021, despite being registered at one, while more than 1.2 million have not been seen by their dentist for five years.
Some Scots are being forced to perform ‘DIY dentistry’, while others have resorted to private treatment abroad.
The Mail on Sunday has reported how Ukrainian refugees who sought safety in Scotland were having to go to Poland, or even back to Ukraine, to secure appointments.

Public Health Scotland (PHS) has confirmed that, as of September last year, 1,898,252 people – more than a third of those registered with a dentist – have not had an examination or treatment in the past three years.
Of those, 1,258,049 have not seen an NHS dentist for more than five years, while 560,000 people have gone more than a decade without a check-up.
