When do double demerits start over this Easter long weekend? trends now

Motorists are being warned to slow down and take care as holidaymakers hit the road over the Easter long weekend.

Double demerits and huge fines will be in place across several states as police look to crackdown on dangerous driving such as speeding and using a mobile phone while driving.

Double demerits are in place NSW, ACT and Western Australia - for five consecutive days  from Thursday, March 28 up until, and including, Monday, April 1.

Double demerit points apply for speeding, illegal use of mobile phones, not wearing a seat belt and riding without a motorcycle helmet.

The NRMA warns motorists in the NSW and ACT that mobile phone detection cameras remain active during the double demerit period.

Drivers caught using their phones will face a $352 fine, or $469 if in a school zone, along with 10 demerit points.

Double demerits in NSW will be in force from Thursday, 28 March and continue until 11.59pm on Monday April, 1.

Motorists will be hit with double the points for speeding, illegally using their mobile phones, not wearing their seatbelt, and riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

Under the scheme first introduced in 1997, anyone caught speeding, speaking on their mobile phone, riding without a helmet or not wearing a seatbelt will lose double the normal amount of points from their license and getting fined twice as much.

NSW Police say they will also be targeting other high-risk driver behaviour, including the Four Ds - drink, drug, dangerous and distracted driving.
