Sport shops revolt over Nike's England football kit fiasco: Stores start ... trends now

Sports shops are selling St George's Cross iron-on transfers so fans can cover the controversial design on the new England football shirt.

Nike has come under fire after making a 'playful update' to the traditional St George's Cross on the back of the new Three Lions shirt - by adding purple and blue horizontal stripes.

Many supporters were outraged when the kit designer revealed last week it had replaced the horizontal line on the traditional red cross with a different colour.

Director at The Sports Shop, Grant Walters, is now selling heat transfers for £4.95 featuring the old St George's Cross, so fans can cover up the new Nike version.

The transfers have gone on sale at his shops in Kingswinford and Stourbridge, in the West Midlands.

Many fans have reported being upset by the change, while Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the flag should not be 'messed with'. Meanwhile, opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer called for the kit to be scrapped.

Mr Walters decided to start selling the transfers after he noticed the demand from fans to keep the traditional England flag on the uniform.

'For me, I don't think any national flag should be changed. We're providing a solution for people. If it helps out, we're also raising money for charity. It's more about a solution to a problem,' he said.

One pound from every sale of a patch will be donated to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Mr Walter added: 'I don't see much
