Peers are set to sign off huge hikes in their allowances today meaning that they can get the equivalent of £100,000 a year.

The tax-free daily allowance in the House of Lords is due to rise from £342 to £360 next month in line with the 5.5 per cent increase in MPs' salaries.

But peers are also due to rubber stamp a change so members who live outside London can receive £100 a night for hotels - something that was previously seen as covered by the per diem.

With around 150 sitting days a year on average, that suggests some peers will get £69,000 in total.

It would require a pre-tax salary of roughly £100,000 to take home that amount.  

The future of the House of Lords has risen up the political agenda amid the standoff between the government, peers and bishops over the Rwanda Bill.

Keir Starmer has pledged to scrap the chamber, although he has been steadily backing away from any concrete plans on how that would happen.

Although peers are not paid salaries, they can claim for every day they attend.
