Head teacher apologises over 'crush' at school gates which left pupils with ... trends now

A head teacher has apologised after a 'crush' at a school gate saw pupils trampled over and left with black eyes and other injuries, as parents have spoken out about the 'terrifying' scenes.

Children at Gordano School in Portishead, near Bristol, crowded around the school's entrance on Monday afternoon after teachers reportedly failed unlock the gate in time for the end of the day.

Shocking video showed pupils clambering on top of one another, and screaming to get out as more tried to push through the gate from behind.

The school has now said it is 'deeply sorry' for the incident, and its head teacher Louise Blundell has written to parents to say an investigation is underway into how it happened.

'Things clearly went wrong, and I apologise that our students had to experience that situation,' she said in the letter, seen by the BBC, adding that 'human error' was to blame for the incident.

She went on to describe chaotic videos of the pupils crammed together, with some seen on the ground, as 'upsetting to watch'.
