A bungling cat burglar who tried to crawl through a cat-flap was caught and jailed after leaving a trail of blood at the scene. 

Simon Highmore, 34, attempted to crawl through the six inch wide opening to gain entry to a children's home but inadvertently got stuck and gashed his arm as he wriggled free.

Police investigating the attempted break at the property on on Warwick Road, Carlisle, found blood spattered around the cat-flap and on vehicles parked at the property and later traced Highmore via DNA testing.

He was also linked to three other raids - one at a garage in which a pressure washer and paint spray was stolen, a further break in at a shed and the theft of a car radio.

At Carlisle Crown Court, Highmore, of Melbourne Road, Carlisle, was jailed for 20 months for attempted burglary.

The botched raid took place in May last year after Highmore had been freed from prison from another 18 month stretch for burglary and possession of drugs

He entered the backyard of the children's home via a rear gate before spotting the catflap as a possible entry point when he reached the back door.
