An Australian woman was unable to board a flight for her dream holiday to Bali because of a tiny tear in her passport.

Elyse Elmer was due to fly out to Bali from Sydney, but was stopped from boarding the plane by officials.

'So in Australia, at the counter, they refused to let me on the flight,' Ms Elmer explained in a video posted to social media.

'I cried in front of everyone. That tiny tear was all it took for them to refuse entry.'

She then rushed home to order an emergency passport. It arrived just two days later, allowing her to finally depart for Denpasar.

Ms Elmer was one of dozens of Australians turned away with only minor damage to their travel documents in recent years.

AUSTRALIAN PASSPORT OFFICE ADVICE 

Travellers are advised to make sure their passports are 'intact and in good condition', with normal wear and tear largely not a problem.

'Contact with water or other liquids can cause serious damage,' it advises.

'You must not tear or remove pages from your passport.

'It is critical that all the details and the photos on the personal data pages are legible and clear, and that there is no evidence
