Northerners are 'the friendliest neighbours' with Liverpudlians the most likely ... trends now By Jowena Riley Published: 12:16 BST, 2 April 2024 | Updated: 14:47 BST, 2 April 2024 47 shares 62 Viewcomments In a delightful twist on the age-old North-South divide, a recent survey reveals that northern charm reigns supreme when it comes to neighbourly friendliness in the UK. While the eternal debate of Northern hospitality versus Southern reserve rages on, social networking service Nextdoor have designed a system that tots 'neighbourly' attributes and come up with a Good Neighbour score out of 100. Nextdoor's study has found that neighbours in the North of England are more likely to have a conversation over the garden fence, feed your pet, accept deliveries and keep a watchful eye over your home while you're away. As Northerners emerge as the epitome of warmth and hospitality, Liverpudlians are leading the pack overall as the friendliest neighbors in the nation. Scoring an impressive 72 out of 100, Liverpool is home to neighbours who are most likely to lend you a cup of sugar, give you a lift or put your bins out when you're in need. Following closely behind, the steel city of Sheffield emerged as a close contender for the friendliest neighbourhood in the UK. Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle were also named as having some of the warmest of neighbours. In contrast, Southern cities such as Norwich, London, and Birmingham ranked significantly lower on the friendliness scale. Surprisingly, London - which is generally viewed as home to people who are more aloof - was not bottom of the list. Scoring just six out of 100, Norwich, earned the unfortunate title of having the 'most miserable' of neighbours. London trailed closely behind, with a score of seven points, followed by Nottingham, Birimingham and Brighton - reflecting a trend of less interactive community dynamics in the Southern regions. A spokesman for Nextdoor said: 'If you want good neighbours, the secret is to move up North. Of course, being and having good neighbours goes both ways - and there's nothing stopping you being from making the first move to ignite what could become both a valuable and helpful friendship. Nextdoor UK boss Laura Roche said: 'It can be daunting to introduce yourself to a neighbour. A simple hello can go a long way.' It comes as another study by Foxy Bingo found that Southerners are more sociable and have seven more friends than people in the North. People living in the south of the country are more extroverted, with as many as 30 close friends on average, compared to 23 for Northerners.
