Former neighbours of Angela Rayner who contradict her version of events in the ‘two homes’ row have not been approached by police despite allegations that she broke the law, they have said.

People who lived next to Sir Keir Starmer’s number two before she became an MP have told the Daily Mail her claim that she and her husband maintained separate homes following their 2010 marriage is untrue.

Last week Greater Manchester Police announced they were ‘reassessing’ their original decision that the deputy Labour leader had done nothing wrong over allegations that she registered to vote at her ex-council house while in fact letting her brother live there.

But the force has so far declined to say whether detectives have interviewed witnesses or examined documents relating to the controversy, which has left Ms Rayner on the ropes.

Key witnesses include 83-year-old Sylvia Hampson, who lived next-door to Ms Rayner’s then husband Mark’s house just a mile away across Stockport, Greater Manchester.

‘I’d be happy to tell them what I know if they do.’

Meanwhile people who lived close to Ms Rayner’s former council house in Vicarage Road have told the Mail they only recall her brother living there - and that he referred to her as his ‘landlady’.

Asked on Monday whether detectives had asked them for a statement, one said: ‘I’ve heard nothing whatsoever from police about this.’

Others said they had seen no sign of police activity in the street in recent weeks.
