Tory fears of a general election catastrophe are set to grow after a new mega-poll showed the party are on course for a worse defeat than in 1997.

A new YouGov MRP study, published today, found the Conservatives would win just 155 seats at the upcoming contest - with a string of top Tories suffering defeat.

This compares to the 165 seats the Tories won in the face of New Labour's landslide victory nearly 27 years ago.

At the last general election in 2019, the Conservatives won 365 seats under then-prime minister Boris Johnson.

The latest MRP study showed Labour are set to win 403 constituencies with Rishi Sunak facing a red 'tidal wave' when he calls the general election.

This would leave Labour short of the 418-seat mark they reached under Sir Tony Blair in 1997, but would still hand Sir Keir Starmer a stonking 154-seat majority.
