This is the hilarious moment the French opening of their Olympic Aquatics Centre goes awry - when a diver slips on their diving board, bounces once and tumbles in the water.

French Olympian Alexis Jandard saw his feet fly out from under him as he fell on his backside in front of the huge crowd - including president Emmanuel Macron - as they opened the £154million (€180m) purpose-built venue.

The 26-year-old diver was wearing Speedos in the colours of the French flag as he lined up to somersault into the pool alongside two other athletes as part of the celebrations.

In a reply post to the video of his fall, posted on X, Jandard said: 'Thanks for the support! For your information, my back is fine, but my ego…'

The athlete, who won silver in the Team Event alongside Jade Gillet at the World Aquatics Championships in 2022, bounced up and down on his board before landing awkwardly on his right foot.

And in a fateful moment he appeared to lose his balance and fell backwards onto the board before toppling into the water.
