As his shopfront was destroyed by an old car used by the gang as a battering ram he grabbed the 18ins long bat he kept behind the counter for emergencies. His shop is set in a small jewellery section of the busy Harehills Road where fellow traders say they are living in fear of robbery due to policing cuts. He is seen on camera as he appears in the window and stands up to the balaclava clad men, waving the bat. He is captured watching in disbelief as the gang speed away in the second car, a black Audi. A concerned passer-by pokes his head through the smashed window to check on the shopkeeper. The middle aged woman who recently opened a dress shop next door said: 'I am still shaking with fear. It was so scary. 'I heard an almighty bang. It was like an earthquake. The whole of my shop shook. I looked outside and could not believe what was happening.' Eye witnesses said a crowd gathered to watch what was happening as one of the robbers marched around shouting for everyone to keep away. One business neighbour who filmed what happened. said: 'There was a customer in the shop. We heard a big bang. She said something has happened across the road maybe a car crash. 'They had reversed an old banger into the shop window. The window broke and the wall. Then the Audi turned up with the four robbers. 'Afterwards, they drove away leaving the other car behind. The cops were here in about 15 to 20 minutes. 'It was peak time for us with everyone rushing to catch the shops before they close. A man came out of the car and was proper shouting at everyone to back off. I did not see any weapons but everyone was terrified.' The shop specialises in gold and jewellery, particularly for the Asian wedding market. First on the scene was Ashock Mason, 60, who runs the jewellers next door but one. He said: 'We were just about to close and did not realise anything was wrong until a woman from the bus stop came up started tapping on the window. 'I was first on the scene. Mazeer was pale with shock. I asked him if he was okay and he said he was. Then he asked me if I had called the police and I said yes. 'The inside of the shop was destroyed. The front was totally gone. All the counters were smashed. 'He had to hang around until 10.30 or 11 at night to wait for someone to come and replace the steel shutters.' Mr Malik, who is believed to be aged in his 50s and lives in Bradford with his wife and family, was said to be recovering at home from his ordeal. He is believed to have run the shop for 15 to 20 years. Cautiously, he did not display any of his stock in the front window. Mr Mason said that crime was so rife in the area that local traders were arriving scared every day for work. Crime is so bad all the banks have moved away and there are not even any ATMs around here. 'There have just spent half a million pounds on traffic calming measures so you would think they could afford someone in a uniform walking about. 'We need more security in this area. We have got to the stage that we come here every morning worried that something is going to happen. 'There may be cameras all over the place but just one police car in the area would make a big difference to the local community. Otherwise, people will move away.'
