What could the verdict be?

Justice Lee could come to a range of conclusions in Bruce Lehrmann's defamation trial.

He may find that Mr Lehrmann did rape Brittany Higgins on a balance of probability, or he may find that no such rape took place.

Alternately, he could find there's too much conflicting evidence to make a determination one way or the other.

Mr Lehrmann and Ms Higgins both had credibility issues at various points throughout the trial.

On Mr Lehrmann's part, he gave multiple reasons as to why he was in Parliament House with Ms Higgins after 1am on the night of the alleged rape.

He was there to drink whisky, according to one explanation, but in another he was there to make notes on Question Time briefs and pick up his keys.

Ms Higgins was unable to prove when she took a photo of a bruise on her leg, allegedly cause by Mr Lehrmann's knee digging into her thigh on the night of the alleged rape.

However, there was no evidence of that photo in her phone before January 2021 - two years after the fact.

If Justice Lee is unable to determine whether Ms Higgins was raped or not, the truth defence has failed and Network Ten and Wilkinson would have to rely on a qualified privilege defence.

That means Ms Higgins' allegations were a matter of public interest if the media outlet acted reasonably.
