The ringleader of a notorious paedophile gang who recruited Vanessa George into abusing babies and toddlers has been granted a rare two-day parole hearing and believes he will be freed.

Colin Blanchard, 53, from Rochdale, has been told by the Parole Board that he will get extra time to personally present his case to the three person panel on May 29 and 31.

He was handed an indeterminate sentence in 2011 for sex abuse charges and told he would serve a minimum of nine years. So far, Blanchard has been behind bars for a total of 12-years.

The paedophile had convinced nursery worker George to abuse 64 babies and toddlers in her care at Little Ted's nursery in Efford, Plymouth.

She shared videos of her attacks with Blanchard and was jailed for seven years and released in September 2019.

Blanchard had been due to have a one day hearing in private on the 8th February, but as MailOnline revealed, it was adjourned at the last minute due to the complexity and sensitivity of the appeal.

The decision to give the hearing an extra day was taken to ensure that the panel could thoroughly question Blanchard, who will give evidence via a video link from a closed prison.

He has been buoyed by extra time given to the hearing as he believes his behaviour in jail and the number of courses he's undertaken to address his sex offending means he has a good chance of being recommended for release on licence.

A source said: 'He feels a two-day hearing will help his cause as the extra time will give him an opportunity to explain in depth all the strides forward he believes he has taken and his good behaviour in jail.

'Blanchard feels there is no logical reason for the Parole Board to reject his application to be freed on licence. He will state he is no longer a threat to the public.'

Blanchard, a former IT expert, was handed an indeterminate sentence in 2011 for sex abuse charges and told he would serve a minimum of nine years. The pervert has so far spent an extra three years in jail.

The businessman is currently being held at Category C HMP Wymott, near Leyland, Lancaster, which has specialist facilities for housing
