Locals have been urged to help police identify a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a grandmother, while she was playing with her grandson. 

The incident happened at St Albans, west of Melbourne in December last year. 

The 66-year-old woman was playing with her young grandson on a nature strip at the intersection of Alfreda Street and Craigielea Avenue, when the man approached the pair. 

The man, who is not known to the grandmother, is understood to have asked her for cigarettes.
