The four-metre crocodile responsible for killing a 16-year-old boy has been shot dead.

The body of Edward Morrison Warusam, who went by his cultural name - Baidham, was found on Thursday in mangroves on Saibai Island, in the Torres Strait.

Baidham, 16, was travelling on a dinghy with another teenager, aged 13, on Wednesday night but had to abandon the boat when the engine broke down.

The pair attempted to swim 500m to shore but Baidham disappeared in waist-deep water.

His body was found about 4am the following morning with injuries consistent with a crocodile attack.
