Three out of four British adults are set to avoid swimming in the sea this summer amid fears over raw sewage, a poll indicates.

Official statistics show that sewage spills by water companies into rivers and seas doubled last year.

An exclusive YouGov poll - commissioned by the Central Office of Public Interest (COPI) - of 2,000 adults seen by the Daily Mail reveals that a shocking 73 per cent of respondents answered that they will either be 'not very likely' (22 per cent) or 'not at all likely' (51 per cent) to enter British waters in what experts predict could be our hottest summer yet.

Fewer than one in 20 (4 per cent) of people say they are 'very likely' to go for a dip.

Anxiety over sewage is shared by water sports enthusiasts, including wild swimmers and kayakers, as well as those attending leisure events.
