A man charged with murdering his mother has faced court for the first time as neighbours describe her death as a 'shock to the system'.
Joan Drane, 78, was found dead inside her home of four decades in Yangebup, in Perth's southern suburbs, at about 7.15am on Monday.
Police allege Andre Lafayette Drane, 54, murdered his elderly mother sometime between Saturday and Monday.
It's understood neighbours raised the alarm after blood - including bloody footprints - were spotted outside the home on Monday
