The father of a seven-year-old girl who died trying to cross the Channel has revealed how he tried to save her from being crushed but heartbreakingly declared 'I could not protect her'.

Ahmed Alhashimi, 41, found himself trapped on an overloaded boat, battling for air, screaming and begging people to move, when the dinghy capsized near Calais on Tuesday morning. 

As the crowd of migrants pressed tightly together, Ahmed desperately tried to hold onto his seven-year-old daughter Sara who was being crushed beneath him.

He told the BBC today how he fought to keep hold of his daughter's hand amidst the growing panic, but admitted 'I could not protect her. I will never
