India is in uproar after an ally of the nation's prime minister fled to Germany amid allegations he raped or sexually assaulted up to 400 women while filming himself.

Prajwal Revanna, 33, the grandson of a former prime minister of India, is also alleged to have used the 2,800 videos of the assaults to blackmail his victims. Police are currently probing the allegations.

Revanna, whose grandfather is HD Deve Gowda, India's prime minister for nine months in 1996, runs the Janata Dal (Secular) or JDS, party which is politically allied with current PM Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state of Karnataka, south India.

The allegations of abuse were made public last week, after roughly 2,000 USB sticks that held videos of Revanna's attacks were left on buses, trains and park benches across Karnataka as the state's 28 constituencies are holding its elections.

One alleged victim, a former councillor in Bangalore, told local media that Revanna, who was standing for a seat in a seat in the city of Hassan before he fled India, repeatedly raped her.
