Avid listeners of The Archers were last night fearing a bloodbath on the normally sedate BBC drama, but the ending of the highly-anticipated episode was instead eclipsed by a shocking twist.

Fans of the Radio 4 show had been fearing up to four beloved characters could have ended up dead after a driving disaster that saw two vehicles plunge off a bridge into the river.

Yet instead they were left stumped when the 'village hero' turned to an 'evil monster' within minutes.

The near-fatal accident occurred after young George Grundy stumbled upon Alice Carter passed out in her car after necking a bottle of vodka. She had secured the keys the glovebox yet he decided to drive her home in the car.

It was then that George's collided with ongoing traffic seeing two cars fall into the water - with Fallon Rogers becoming trapped in her vehicle as it plunged into the water. Mick and Joy's car also was caught up in the terrifying ordeal.

George set out to save the day, grabbing Fallon and saving her from drowning, leading him to praised by his fellow villagers for his heroic actions.

Yet his courageous actions are quickly overshadowed. As emergency services race to the scene of near-devastation, George slyly manages to move Alice's semi-conscious body into the driving seat - making it look as though she was responsible.

The shocking episode ends with villagers pondering that Alice's fate now lies in the hands of the authorities.
