An evil dog owner, who was caught on CCTV repeatedly punching his terrified Cockapoo and swinging her around by the neck, has avoided jail.

Distressing CCTV footage shows vile abuser Thomas Hardy, 32, throwing one of the dogs into a lift before kicking her and then smashing the security camera.

Another clip shows the female tan Cockapoo being punched five times to the head before Hardy placed her in a strangle-hold, compressed her chest between his legs and swung her around by the neck.

The security footage was taken from Prior Court in Billingham on July 18 last year.

In a separate incident, 10 days later, Hardy was seen grabbing a male brown-coloured Cockapoo by the neck before violently putting a lead on him, dropping him to the floor and yanking him off his front feet.

The sickening footage, which MailOnline has seen and decided not to show in full, was passed to the RSPCA by the police and an investigation by the animal welfare charity followed.

Hardy, 32, admitted two charges of unnecessary suffering by inflicting blunt force trauma, physical violence and intimidatory behaviour.

He was given a 12 week prison sentence for each offence — suspended for 24 months — when he was sentenced at Teesside Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 30.

He was also banned from keeping animals for 12 years.

Police, accompanied by an RSPCA inspector, visited the flat on August 2 last year and entry was forced due to concerns after there was no reply.

In written evidence to the court, the RSPCA inspector said: 'Inside the property was a light brown Cockapoo type
