An Aussie dad is being labelled a hero after he towed his burning caravan away from homes after it burst into flames.

Renae and Tony Butler were at home when their caravan, parked in their driveway on Floribunda Place in Ormeau on the Gold Coast, caught fire late on Wednesday night.

It's believed that the campervan's lithium batteries malfunctioned, causing a large fire that spread to neighbouring fences and trees.

Ms Butler told 7News nothing in their caravan was in use at the time of the incident.

'The caravan has been sitting for four weeks, not plugged into anything, had no charge to it, no lights, and it just started,' she said.

Ms Butler explained that her husband and neighbours tried to get the fire under control using garden hoses.
