More than 13,300 homes and businesses have been left without power around Sydney's inner west as wild weather batters the city.

Thousands of Ausgrid customers went without electricity on Friday night amid heavy rain.

Residents reported street lights and even traffic lights going down in the area.

Suburbs including Newton and Alexandria have been impacted.

'The traffic lights, street lights and shop lights are all out,' one inner west resident told Daily Mail Australia. 

'People screamed and ran out of the shops.'

It comes after a week of wet weather lashing most of the country with more miserable conditions on the forecast.

Sydney could cop as much as 45mm of rain on Saturday and up to 20mm on Sunday. 

The reason for the wet weather is a high pressure system centred just south of the country drawing in moisture from the atmosphere which will turn to rain as it meets a pool of upper-level cold air over the next few days.
