A seaside café slammed for 'rip off prices' after charging customers £4 for toast has hit back by claiming it is made with only the 'finest' locally-baked bread and salted butter.

Remo's, which overlooks Aberavon Beach, in Port Talbot, South Wales, was criticised last week when they introduced a new menu with new, higher prices.

Visitors branded the £4 cost for two slices of toast 'mad' and ridiculous,' with one saying: 'Wow rip off expensive prices – this is Port Talbot lol.'

Port Talbot is among the most deprived areas in Wales, with average weekly earnings of £534 – around £8 (or two lots of toast) less than the Welsh average.

Aberavon ward, where the café is located, is among the top 25 per cent most deprived in Wales.

'The building of Remo's was never a plan to make us all rich, it was always meant to be a place to be proud of, where people can come and enjoy the views over Aberavon Beach, and taste the passion that we put into our homemade ice cream, our Italian coffees, and the lovely meals that our talented chefs work very hard to produce,' Mr Difrancesco said.

'It is indeed £4 for two slices of toast (£2 for one); but we serve only hand cut doorstep slices of fresh bread from a local bakery that have been toasted and buttered
