The Eurovision Song Contest is normally a homage to glitter, glamour and high camp. This year it was very much about the toxic politics of the Middle East.

A howling mob gathered outside the venue in Sweden, chanted anti-Semitic slogans and demanded Israel's expulsion from the competition over the war in Gaza.

The venom was so intense that Eden Golan, the 20-year-old representing Israel, was confined to her hotel under police protection until she was due to perform.

As she took to the stage, there were boos from some in the audience. In the UK, pro-Palestine groups intimidated some pubs and bars into cancelling screenings.

How shameful that these people stood with Hamas, rather than the Jews murdered, raped and kidnapped by the terror group at another music festival on October 7.

Echoing the mood, the professional judges awarded Israel a paltry 52 points, putting them well down the leaderboard.

Then something remarkable happened. In the public vote, Israel was the overwhelming choice. An extraordinary 323 points – including a maximum 12 from the UK – propelled Ms Golan in to fifth place.

Eurovision is hardly a scientific poll but it does give an intriguing snapshot of public opinion. It's clear the protesters running amok in London and our universities do not represent the silent majority.
