Dr Sophie Roome breaks silence after ex James Harrison kills her young son in ... trends now

The mother of a toddler who was killed in a suspected murder-suicide by his father has broken her silence.

Dr Sophie Roome expected Rowan, two, to be returned by her ex James Harrison about 4pm on Sunday after the ICU physician dropped him off for an access visit that morning.

She called police who visited Harrison's Lismore unit about 5.30pm and left when noone answered the door, however, upon returning four hours later at the insistence of the boy's grandmother, officers broke in and found the pair dead.

Dr Roome issued a statement with her family on Wednesday.

'Our family is facing incomprehensible grief. Our beloved Rowan was taken from us in the most unfathomable way.'

'Rowan's life was ended by an evil and cowardly act of violence, perpetrated by a person he should have been able to trust the most. There are no possible excuses for this hurt, and no end to the pain it has caused.'

'Rowan was a beautiful, joyful, and adored little boy. He had so many amazing qualities, and his short life was filled with rich and happy experiences,' Roome and her family said in the statement.

'He loved music, the beach, swimming, his friends and his family. He touched the hearts of everyone lucky enough to be in his world.

'We are devastated. We will love and miss Rowan forever. We thank all those who have provided support, and we acknowledge the suffering of James' family, which is also immense.'

NSW Police deputy commissioner Peter Thurtell said on Monday that 'it was obvious to us that the father had taken his life and the life of the two-year-old'.

'My understanding is there was no weapon involved'.

He said Harrison appeared to have made a system inside the house 'where both he and the child passed away as a result of the system he set up'.

Police reportedly found a 'gas poisoning' apparatus rigged up inside the rental property.
