All the engagements the royal family may miss as King Charles announces the ... trends now

The Royal Family have confirmed they will postpone a number of forthcoming public engagements as the general election campaign rages.

It is normal procedure for the monarch and senior royals not to undertake any public duties that could divert attention from campaigning - or appear to favour one political party.

However it is understood that next month's commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings both in the UK and France will still go ahead as planned.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King has cancelled his public engagements for the rest of the week.

The Prince of Wales will no longer be undertaking visits on Thursday following updated guidance from Buckingham Palace.

He had two in Crewe on Friday and one in London tomorrow. Buckingham Palace say they hope to rearrange the visits.

It is understood it was deemed prudent to postpone them in order not to immediately detract from the General Election announcement.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: 'Following the Prime Minister's statement this afternoon calling a General Election, The Royal Family will – in accordance with normal procedure – postpone engagements that may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign.

'Their Majesties send their sincere apologies to any of those who may be affected as a result.'

Although he is still undergoing cancer treatment, the King had a packed diary of engagements planned in the coming weeks after being given the go ahead by doctors to undertake more public duties.

His Majesty met with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak yesterday for 15 minutes directly after he held a public engagement at the palace in honour of his Prince's Trust charity.

The two men spoke in the King's private audience room as Mr Sunak informed the head of state of his intention to call a General Election.

The monarch normally meets his Prime Minister on Wednesday evenings for their weekly audience, which did not go ahead.

Sources have made clear that there will not be a blanket postponement of official engagements. Events will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

It is likely that key ceremonial occasions such as Trooping the Colour, the Order of the Garter, Holyrood Week and Royal Ascot will be given permission to run as planned.
