The text was only four words long, but it was enough to convince Karen Ristevski's friends there was something seriously wrong: 'Have you seen mum?'
The message was sent by Sarah, Ristevski's only daughter, to close friend Sharryn Hili on June 30 last year, just a day after the Melbourne mother went missing.
That message would kick-start a seven-month manhunt that ended on Monday when Ristevski's badly decomposed body was found hidden beneath two logs in bushland near her Victoria home.
Sharryn Hili (left), a close family friend of Karen Ristevski (right), has recalled the moment she received a text from Ristevski's daughter asking: 'Have you seen mum?'
Recalling the moment she got the text, Ms Hili told 9 News that she immediately called Sarah, but discovered the 21-year-old was 'too devastated to speak.'
Ms Hili said her next stop was at Ristevski's boutique, but she could find no sign of her there either.
So she called Borce, Ristevski's husband, to ask whether the couple had a 'tiff' the previous evening.
Ms Hili said she called Sarah (left) but she was 'too distraught to speak'. When she found no trace of Ristevski (right) at her shop, she knew something was wrong
She said: 'He told me "we did have a bit of a disagreement" and he just said that she hasn't come
