A British soldier has been arrested in connection with the death of fellow serviceman who was killed in a hit-and-run on a UK base in Cyprus this weekend.

Corporal John Fernandez, 32, of the 2nd Battalion the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, was hit by a car while walking in the UK sovereign base area in Dhekelia, southeast Cyprus on Saturday night.

An Army source said the car, which was not a military vehicle, fled the scene, and an unnamed British soldier has now been detained in connection with Cpl Fernandez's death.

Local news agency CNA reports that the man arrested served in the same unit as Cpl Fernandez, and the incident is now under investigation by the Royal Military Police.   

A spokesman for the MoD said: 'We can confirm that Cpl John Fernandez of The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment was killed in a road traffic incident in Dhekelia, Cyprus, on Saturday evening.
