A tourist has revealed his holiday from hell after coming back from the Canary Islands covered in bites from bed bugs in his hotel room - which led him to miss work and destroy his clothes.

Kevin McMahon said he was looking forward to a relaxing trip to Tenerife with a friend only for it to turn into a horrendous ordeal.

Mr McMahon spent 10 days on the island in early July on the £500 package holiday and initially enjoyed himself, only to find he developed a strange rash halfway through.

The 49-year-old told MailOnline: 'I thought it was prickly heat at first but I thought it was strange so I went to the pharmacy and was told I had been out in the sun too much and was given some lotion.

'But by the next day it was 10 times worse. I went to another pharmacy and they said the same thing and gave me anti-histamines.

'The next day it was worse again, and by this time it was near the end of the holiday. My mate was furious as he wanted to have a big last night but I refused to go outside because I looked horrendous.

'I stayed indoors all day and I was lying on that bed all day. Then in the middle of the night I woke up and saw one of these things sucking blood from my arm.

'I got up and switched the light on and the bed was crawling with them. How in this day and age does a hotel have bed bugs? I don't understand it. It was a holiday from hell.

Mr McMahon said he did not discover the bugs, right, until the last day of the holiday and had been perplexed by the strange rash, left, he developed halfway through the trip but had been told by pharmacists it was due to 'too much time in the sun'

'When you go on these holidays you expect safety and hygiene standards because you pay a lot of money for them, and this was so poor.'
