Queensland prison inmate dies in vicious brawl

An inmate died in a wild brawl in the exercise yard of a high-security prison in far north Queensland.

Ashley Gavenor got into a fist fight with another prisoner in Townsville Correctional Centre after 10am on Tuesday.

The 48-year-old collapsed about 30 seconds after the pair were separated and though prison guards rushed to his aid, they could not revive him.

Detectives arrived after Gavenor was declared dead about 10.50am by medical staff and began investigating before the Corrective Services Investigation Unit arrived.

A 41-year-old man, believed to be the other man in the fight, was assisting police with their inquiries.
