With Montreal’s municipal election coming down to the wire, Tyler Lemco has decided to go negative and/or musical.

The mayoral candidate — yes, actually — released a diss track targeting incumbent mayor Denis Coderre on Monday.

The track’s no “Hit ’em up,” but it does take aim at Coderre’s handling of the public purse.

“The way you spend the money, that concerns me,” Lemco quasi-raps, “so I’m going to shine a light on the subject, not the Cartier.”

In his tweet announcing the diss track, Lemco speculates that he could be the first mayoral candidate to attack opponents through the medium of song, and rap in particular. Insofar as no Gérald Tremblay or Jean Fortier diss tracks come to mind, this may well be true.

But who can really be sure. Maybe Jean Drapeau spat bars.

For now, though, it appears Lemco is no fan of Équipe Denis Coderre.

As for Projet Montréal, the Youtuber concludes: “And Valérie Plante … well you’re kind of cool.”

There’s not going to be another mayoral debate before the Nov. 5 election, but all of this suggests an all-candidates rap battle might be called for.
