An infamous sex offender in an upscale California neighborhood was able to live as a host to unsuspecting guests in an Airbnb rental after not showing up on the state's registry.

Carl Bergstrom, a former wealthy 'concierge' doctor whose rape trial in 2009 rocked the community of Carmel Valley, entertained dozens of guests at a home with Airbnb host 'Sharon'.

While neighbors in Carmel Valley are away of Bergstrom's history, Airbnb didn't catch on for more than a year, because he isn't publicly registered as a sex offender and isn't directly named as a host on the site.

The Carmel Valley home was listed on Airbnb by Sharon a little over a year ago, and while Bergstrom's name isn't listed, guests often mentioned him in the review section.

'Sharon and Carl took very good care of us,' a couple wrote in a review. 'Sharon and Carl were great hosts and their advice for things to do in the local area were excellent.'

The reviewers added that Sharon and Carl were 'extremely accommodating', adding that they had made 'two great new friends'.

'Hosts need to be transparent about who has access to their home (so we can check) and not doing so can lead to removal like in this case. We removed this host and this listing from our community,' Nick Shapiro, Airbnb's Global Head of Trust & Risk Management, told Business Insider.

Bergstrom was arrested in 2009 after a woman claimed she woke up at his home after a night of drinking and found him assaulting her.
