A brawl in a Melbourne cafe ended in the arrest of one man and the hospitalisation of another who was hit with a chair.

Two men entered the Chapel Street eatery at 8.20pm on Monday night, where a verbal disagreement with a staff member sparked a physical altercation.

A Police Victoria spokesperson said that the men walked out the front of the cafe, where the victim, 39, and his friends were eating at a table.
