A man is fighting for his life after gas bottles in the back of his ute exploded during a crash in eastern Melbourne, destroying the vehicle and damaging nearby houses.   

Acetylene gas bottles exploded in the tray as the vehicle rolled on Mountain Highway near Bayswater at 8.20am, resulting in a 'massive bang' as the bottles leaked, burst and scattered debris onto the road.

The driver, believed to be a man in his 50s, has been rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, a spokesperson from Victoria Police
